This time of year, everyone and their mom is out here telling you that you need to buy a holiday outfit for your party. I get it. Everyone wants to feel fancy and you certainly want to look “nicer” than you do on a normal night out. But I’m here to tell you….you don’t need to buy an entire outfit for your holiday party.
I know, I know. I’m the worst blogger ever. I should be linking you to a hundred sequined dresses and like fifty velvet tops. And don’t get me wrong, I love that stuff, but I’m also here to say that you shouldn’t feel obligated to buy an entire outfit for one party. That’s silly. Most typical “holiday” outfits are super impractical for the rest of the year, and I’m not here for that. I don’t have the budget for that and you might not either.
So instead, I’m sharing a holiday party outfit that I built from existing items in my closet. The whole thing cost me less than $60 total. Not too shabby, right?
Little Black Dress.
You most likely have some sort of little black dress in your closet. If not, that’s something I *will* tell you to buy, because you will wear it all the time. Pick your favorite silhouette and if you’re extra like me, choose something with a fun texture. Once you’ve got your little black dress, it’s time to add your accessories.
Wear whatever dress shoes you want. If you want to buy a pair of green velvet heels…do it! If not, your favorite pair of black heels (or in my case, booties) will work great. Let’s be honest, most of the time your shoes don’t get noticed at parties because it’s too dark anyway. Just make sure whatever you’re wearing is comfortable for the activities of the party (dancing, standing, double fisting two cocktails while you also eat a ton of appetizers and hope no one notices….etc).
Wear something big and bold. If you’ve already got some big jewelry, awesome! If not, hit up BaubleBar sales, thrift stores/resale shops, Target, or TJ Maxx and get something BOLD. If you want to do holiday colors – great! If not, anything shiny will work just fine. I’m wearing some grey sparkly earrings because honestly I hadn’t planned on using this as a holiday look. If I had, I would’ve gone a little more sparkly and probably worn a necklace instead of earrings. Earrings tend to get a little lost in my hair.
Okay, this is where I might tell you to buy something. Honestly, if you have it in your budget (and you don’t already have one), a faux fur coat is THE best way to turn up a holiday outfit. It’s going to make you look crazy elegant and they’re so fun to wear. I thrifted mine for less than $20 (you can get the details here), so it’s totally doable. Just start shopping ahead of time so you’re not scrambling last minute! But honestly, my coat is what pulls this whole look together and takes it from “date night” to something a little more. Plus once you have it, you’ll wear your coat all winter long….promise.
That’s it! It’s honestly a simple look but I think it’s perfect for just about any holiday party and you will wear all of the pieces over and over again. We’re keeping it practical around here.
What are you wearing to your holiday parties this year?
