This outfit is about as “high low fashion” as I get. Usually “high low fashion” refers to mixing designer pieces with fast fashion…but y’all know I’m too broke (and thrifty) to buy designer. Normally I would NEVER spend $60 on a vest but…I finally broke down and did it. ($60 was the sale price!) After seeing Jordan of Darling Truly wear her J Crew puffer vests like a boss, I figured it was time I get one. I ALMOST bought a less practical color but after reigning myself in, I realized black was the way to go.
Shirt: Old Navy ($15; similar) | Necklace: BaubleBar ($20; similar; similar) | Vest: J Crew Factory ($60; exact style here but sold out in black – they run big, I’m wearing a small; similar here for $20) | Jeans: Forever 21 ($8; exact) | Nails: Static Nails ($12-almost sold out) | Shoes: Buffalo Exchange ($20; exact here) | Photos by Chelsea Laine Francis
I’m much more of a fast fashion gal myself, which allows me to buy things that are kind of ridiculous (like the shoes I’m wearing in this post). If it’s less than $20, if it only makes it a year or so…not the end of the world. But if I’m going to drop more than that, it better be something I can mix and match and wear for several years. This puffer vest has already been well worth the investment for me. I’ve thrown it over sweaters, cardigans, t shirts, dresses, layered it with coats and just about anything else you can think of! And I’ve still got at least another full month of winter left!
With investment pieces like this, buying neutrals is your best bet. Yes, it’s nice to have a statement piece here and there but if you stick with neutrals for your investment pieces, you’ll still be able to wear them even as your personal style changes. Just in the last year, I’ve gone from wearing LOTS of color to almost exclusively wearing black, white and grey. No matter what end of the spectrum I’m on, my black puffer vest will still get wear 🙂
Literally everything else I’m wearing falls into the “low” of high-low fashion. The purse was a TJ Maxx clearance buy, shirt was an Old Navy clearance purchase, necklace was a BaubleBar buried bauble, shoes were from Buffalo Exchange (I had a credit from taking in some clothes) and the jeans are regular price $8. Heck, even my nails were on sale!
What pieces do you invest in? Anything you’re willing to shell out more for?
PS I was actually planning on posting a video today that I recorded a while back….but I’ve run into a problem. Now that I’ve changed my hair, seeing myself with pink hair in a video is REALLY freaking me out! Those videos might not ever see the light of day…or I might have to rerecord them. Ooooooops.
