Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought the supplies for a DIY project….and then totally forgotten about it. That’s me with this tutorial. A few months ago, I went thrifting for a new denim jacket so I could cut my old denim jacket into a vest. The same day I was lucky enough to find a nice Levi’s denim jacket for a whopping $5!
Then I totally forgot about it. I put the jacket in my coat closet and since it’s a thousand degrees outside, I never opened the coat closet. Since I’m heading to Wizard World Chicago (TOMORROW!), I was checking my wardrobe for my best geek gear and I realized I never made my denim vest to house my enamel pins! Yes, I wanted the denim vest specifically to put my pins on. No shame.
So I got out my sewing scissors and went to town! Less than five minutes later, my denim vest was born! Literally all you do is cut the sleeves off your jacket – so simple! I cut mine outside the existing seams because I didn’t want it to fray too much. Of course it will fray a tad, but the seams will keep it from getting too “destroyed.” The best part about a denim vest is you can totally make it your own! Add bleach, paint splatters, studs, patches, pins or just keep it plain! The possibilities are endless.
On my face (click any of the products for more info or to purchase): It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream | NYX HD Concealer | elf Mad for Matte Eyeshadow Palette (taupe and brown shades on the crease and lower lash line only) | Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade | Jeffree Star Skin Frost in Ice Cold | elf Mineral Pearls in Natural (as blush because I’m super pale) | Essence All About Matte Fixing Compact Powder | Smashbox Primer Water | ColourPop Lippie Stix in Pitch | Shop Miss A Lashes
Initially I had planned on keeping this look really simple but I kind of kept adding layers on layers to make it more dramatic. Lace tights, combat boots, a pompadour plus some dramatic makeup and I was all set with a rocker chic look! The denim vest really sealed the deal though, without it, it just wouldn’t look complete. Denim vests are actually one of my favorite “third pieces” because they can be worn in literally any season, making the cost per wear very low, especially if you thrift the jacket!
